- STATs
-
(= signal transducers and activators of transcription)Contain SH2 domains that allow them to interact with phosphotyrosine residues in receptors, particularly cytokine-type receptors; they are then phosphorylated by JAKs, dimerize and translocate to the nucleus where they act as transcription factors. Many STATs are known; some are relatively receptor-specific, others more promiscuous, so that a wide range of responses is possible with some STATs being activated by several different receptors, sometimes acting synergistically with other STATs.
